I am concerned about the laws governing sex offenders. How is is possible for a registered sex offender to not post a sign somewhere that he/she resides as a notification to the public? How and why would a sex offender be allowed to marry with small kids residing in the house? How can a sex offender legally use an "alias" name and marry under that name? I thought our state as well as other states had laws in place to protect and prevent things of this nature from happening! I've seen that we do not have such....

Hey you all ought to see what the law does here in NM. NOTHING.. Well now I was wrong. They giveem a slap on the wrist and move them along so they can do it again. Is there any place in this world that is safe to live where justice is actualy done.

Im sorry but I think yall are wrong. You have no idea what the person did. people have been falsly convicted and then people go and try to fight them without knowing what actually happened. I have a friend who is a registered offender, but It was discharged and He didnt do anything. But they always try to kick him out of his apartment everywhere he goes. Its just crap. If the person did it its a different story, but if they didnt you have to know the story.
Period.

If it were a perfect world, there would be an island where we would put all these monsters together to live in perfect harmony. I have NO pitty for anyone who finds thrills in touching children, raping innocent women, or anything else these people did to be considered a sex offender. If it were my child, wife, family member or friend, the law better get to that person before I do. Cause it would not be good for Mr./Mrs. sex offender!!!

The law is a funny thing. In my home town there is a truck that drives around selling ice cream to....thats right....children. Well, it just so happens that the owner of this wonderful business is a registered sex offender. Are we really doing all we can to protect our children in this great nation? If our laws worked, wonderful people like Dru would still be blessing us with her presence. And people like Mr. Rodrigez would be getting proper punishment for the first time he became a sex offender. Lets try harder America, us non offender Americans deserve it!!!!

not all pedophiles are sex offenders, I am a pedophile and i have no desire to molest children, there is a movement out there of pedophiles that will show you all that we are not evil like you think we are
Posted by: MNGal (not registered) on March 12, 2006 at 06:22 pm
I think you need to look up the definition of pedopilia. Encyclopedia Britannica says : a psychosexual disorder in which an adult's arousal and sexual gratification occur primarily through sexual contact with prepubescent children.
Saying a pedophile isn't a sex offender makes me wonder if the thought is based off the wrong thinking of: a. not an offender because not been caught or b. not an offender because self-justifying of behaviors or claiming the child consented.
If you haven't acted on your feelings, I hope you are getting serious mental health counselling so you never will hurt a child. Remember though that molestation isn't just a physical act- it is also in the words used and the looks given.

If a 19 yr has sex with a 17 yr old or a 18 a 15-16 its statutory rape and they have to register as a sex offendor. Why do adult overage women (esp teachers) that had sex with their 15-16 yr old students have to register? The boy is getting high fives from all his friends for "doing her" and in their eyes they are "pimps" and "milf hunters"
Posted by: Anon (not registered) on March 14, 2006 at 05:03 pm
The sex offender registry does not differentiate between sexual predators and other offenders! Keep in mind a registered sex offender can be someone who was guilty of sexual harrasment, someone who unknowlingly had a few underage pictures on their computer, an 18 yo who had sex with a 16 yo, or someone who was falsly convicted. None of these people are automatically dangerous to children or others. No one will hire these felons for any kind of decent job--no one wants them in their neighborhoods either. They are almost forced to become criminals to survive. A good friend has been dealing with this in his life for 5 years. He is probably going to commit suicide one of these days. What he did in this state would not be considered a crime in another. And he did no harm to anyone. We have gone completely crazy to go after these people. The actual numbers of predatory pedophiles is probably quite small compared to those who are on the sex offender registry. They are an easy target--who would ever stand up for a sex offender?
Posted by: Anonymous (not registered) on March 21, 2006 at 08:17 pm
Go to scanusa.com to be informed when convicted sex offenders move to your neighborhood. you can check your state's sex offender registry for more info also. Also, to those who are worried about statutory rape convictees being treated unfairly due to stricter laws, take a moment to check just one page of your state's sex offender registry. I can guarantee that there are not very many of those level offenders. Tier-level management of sex offenders IS in place in many states.
To Mr. Pedophilia: there's nothing that you nor any pedophilia group can ever do to convince me that you would not harm my child. Quite making excuses.
For those who want to make changes, call you state lawmakers and demand that they endorse Jessica's Law. This has got to stop.

Looking for information and found it at this great site...
Posted by: Anonymous (not registered) on June 05, 2006 at 11:35 pm
I agree that there should be some type of letter or something sent to you letting you know that a sex offender is living near you. I dont think it should be our responsibility to check on the status of our neighborhood. I realize people are falsely accused but hey they were involved somehow or they wouldnt even be a suspect in the first place!! And for you pedophile guy please get help!!! Do NOT hurt an innocent child because you have serious mental problems.

I was under the impression that you could look to a web site and get a list of registered offenders in your area. I have found that to be impossble with the choices given. Of course, there are sites that will help you - FOR MONEY. That is not the way it is supposed to be. How can I access the list of ofenders in a town (free) ?

Great site. I was browzing "my" area and thank God no one lives next door to me "yet". I also looked at the photo's that were available and it looks as though I may know one of the individuals by aquaintance. This is a little upsetting and even though I would prefer to know. Some people are victims, some are perpetrators, and some turn into bothe at some point in their life. Counseling is a must as long as the person can be honest (to someone). Everyone has the opportunity for salvation. As far as I can see Christ died for these sins too. God help us.

The Texas database is sorely outdated. There is at least one guy listed as living in Camp county that hasn't lived at that address for at least 10 years. I know this because I lived right next to him. I went to sheriff's department to report it, but was basically bs'd and sent on my way. As for the rest supposedly registered in this county, some of them registered with made up addresses. I say that the offenders shouldn't be the ones to register themselves. They're criminals, for Pete's sake. What makes anyone think they will be honest?

We just wanted to bring up a point and that is why is it that someone that commits a sex offense against a child or for that matter on any individual gets a slap on the writs and someone who gets caught with any substance gets time and they serve their whole time and the person that gets charged with sexual abuse on a child or a person gets out with probation or only serves 3-months in prison and then comes out into our society to commit that crime again. A person that commits sexual assault on anyone is a sick person without any means of rehabilitating themselves but yet are allowed back into our streets to prey on our children over and over again. Instead of filling our prisons with minor convictions should we not keep these people away from society? Why are we letting these sick individuals back into the streets? As long as they register we are suppose to accept them, well that is not good enough how many more children, innocent people need to get assaulted and how many more times must we read or hear of a child or person missing and found dead and raped and how many more times are we going to give these sick individuals the opportunity to hurt our children with only a slap on their wrist. Can our government get their issues straight and start taking care of our children and our communities? verses stealing money from hard working individuals who pay taxes to keep our streets safe and our kids abused free.

What makes anybody think that our Judicial system is all fair and equal under the law! Just look at Congressman Sicko Foley who exploits the young in plain view of everyone in Washington! What a Joke on the general public and how sad for the victims and their family.
I guess it won't be long before our country falls by the wayside as the Roman Empire did with its debauchery and privilged classes. Now we know why the real reason power andpolitics is so addictive. It facilitates the gains of all the illicit sex, drugs and control over people and more......

I can't understand why in CT no matter what your sexual offense you must be a registered Sexual Offender, but in VT you can be a Registered Sexual Offender but not be on the Web Site Search even though you served 4 years for rape. I guess the state to move to is Vermont. A law should be made that no matter what your sexual offense is, you not only be registered but the public should have access to this information. In Vermont after 10 years on the Registery you fall off it. No wonder so many criminals move to Vermont.

I was married to a man that I thought so much of until we were sitting in new apartment as newly weds. And next thing I know my door was busted down and my husband was arrested and they would not tell me why.....That the man I married had a felony warrant for not registering as a sex offender. I never knew he was a sex offender and I had no clue that he had been in prison, I agree that need to let people know about the sex offenders and maybe even check when these people go to get diff. goverment help or anything else. I think it should be posted for people to see who are around them that way they can protect themselves and others.

I have looked but cannot find any information. I wanted to know if a person released from prison for a sex offense can be around minor children? Their own children? Any Texas laws on this? I have a relative that will have minor children at home when he is released after 10 years...I wondered if he'd be permitted back in his home. For the record, he's on round two of our family.

I beleive that predators are a danger to children, but not all are preditors. Some are like what the many people have commented mistakes that some people have made and regret what they have done, payed there debt to society and just want to get on and live productive lives. I think alot of the problem in todays society is woman are now proffesionals 1st mothers 2nd worshipers of money and careers. So what do we do we legeslate laws to take the place of (Mothers responsabilities) so that now the goverment takes the responsability and paints with there broad brush even to take away judicial discretion a core ingrediant to our judicial system!!!! Why not brand RSO on all of them or was it the star of David. Sound familiar were are we going as a society?

What is giving this information into the hands of the public going to do, except create hysteria? These people should not be allowed back into the public if they're likely to re-offend, but if they're not, then they should be left alone. The story of the single woman above, is just wrong, and she should not be made a target because of crimes her partner committed 20 years ago. We pay the police and the courts to deal with these criminals, and they should do a proper job, it should not be left up to us.
Also, nearly all pedophile sex offenders target children they KNOW (how else can they gain their trust if the child doesn't already know that their parents know them?), they don't hang around in parks or outside schools (as someone with a background in social care, who has heard many stories from people who were molested as children, I find the image of the "shady man in a raincoat hanging around schools and parks" false - I've never heard that story. Uncles, brothers, friends of family, fathers and mothers, yes, but never strangers).
Also, if someone IS so sick as to actually want to hang around a park or school to look at children, it's likely they'd happily drive 300 miles to do so, too. Relocating them is a massive waste of resources.
To reiterate: People who are dangerous to our children should be incarcerated. People who are not a danger to society, should not.
Why isn't there a convicted murderer website? Why isn't there a convicted burglar/armed robbery website? These sort of sites only create fear and hysteria in people who are already very afraid. We should not be policing criminals - The police should! If the police fail us, they should be held responsible until they get it right, not leave it to us to make sure we're safe!

We have been comparing the City of Midland, Midland County and the DPS web site oh my they are way off!!! Someone needs to check on these people. We have vicious predictors on the loose and the law enforcement does not even care. I guess if someone in their family was a victim they might care what was going on around them.

You know there are more and more cases of people being falsely accused and convicted of sexual crimes than ever before. Don't you watch the news where they tell about girls coming forward after 10 years or so and saying they lied. CHILDREN do lie but most people that convict people with absolutely no evidence except the childs word should have to go spend time in prison themselves. I understand that you need to protect your kids and grandkids. I do to. But there are alot of people caught up in the web of todays society that automatically assumes the person is guilty just on the word of a child. I know this because my husband is currently serving 5 years for this very thing. He even insisted on a polygraph which he passed. But they still prosecuted him. I know this girl lied because I was there when she said it took place. We have been married for 32 years and I believe I know him as well as anyone and I know this man would never do anything like that. He has always been a good husband and father. This has just devastated our lives. So all of you that are wanting to hang sex offenders you really need to know the story behind each situation. Just think you may be in this situation someday. Be very careful around others!!!

I was a victim of sexual assault as a child by my own father. In the era in which I was raised, these crimes went unreported. My brother became an abuser to his own children, and subsequently did time for his crimes. He is now a registered sex offender who is unable to find work, and who lives on the fringes of society, so technically, he is still paying for his crime, and will likely do so indefinitely. In fact, it is likely that it will become more difficult for him in the years to come. Even today I see him leaning in the direction of becoming invisible in order to avoid such intense and constant scrutiny. However, this is not a testimonial for how rough the sexaul predators have after they are released from prison. I have a firm belief that sex offenders are not in the category of people who can be rehabilitated, and therefore I believe it is necessary that they be registered and held accountable for their crimes, even when they have already paid a price to society through incarceration. I am sorry that my brother is unable to live a regular life, but I am sorrier that his children became the next link in a chain of perpetual pain and emotional and physical trauma.
The effects of sexual abuse can take an entire lifetime to overcome, and some people never actually recover. Many lives end in suicide because of the inability to get past the horror of abuse. The level of abuse my father did to me was far more severe than the abuse my brother did to his children, yet two truths are absolute ... my father never paid a price to society, but I'm sure he will answer for it when his life has ended, and regardless of the "level" of abuse, the level of trauma remains the same. Once a trust has been broken, and a child can no longer feel safe in the company of an abusive adult, the damage has been done. It doesn't matter if the abuse was one-time fondling or full blown rape or physical torture that is used to subdue a victim, the damage happens the moment the trust is broken. The journey back to emotional and physical health can be arduous and sometimes impossible.

Sexual offenders are split between those that are opportunistic (the guy next door, the uncle, or the father who has easy and regular access to their victim and is able to build trust with them), and those that are predators (the guy on the street, or the guy next door that is constantly on the hunt for their next victim). Predators are easier to catch simply because they will repeat their offense again and again, always hunting for their next victim. Opportunistic offenders are much less likely to ever be reported, and they are the guys (or women) who gradually build a relationship with their victim. They are unable to offend without a trust being built first, whereas predators have no concern for building trust. They are more like predatory machines.
The predator is the more dangerous of the two, however, obviously both have the potential to do serious and sometimes permanent harm to a child (or adult victim). Should society treat both equally? In my mind, spoken from the point of view of a victim of incestuous abuse that escalated to include rape and physical torture, and as the daughter of an abuser who was never asked by society to pay a price, and as the sister of a brother who is paying a very high price to society and is on the brink of being forced to go underground in order to simply survive, my answer is YES.
Someone who molests, fondles, penetrates, rapes, tortures or otherwise abuses a child sexually is someone who does not have the ability to stop their deviant behavior. Therefore, in my mind at least, all sexual offenders should be treated as dangerous and as incapable of being rehabilitated. Do we move them to a cental location and isolate them from society? Do we incarcerate them indefinitely?
Yes.
Posted by: Anonymous (not registered) on February 23, 2007 at 02:35 pm
But that's just one person's opinion.
Perhaps, just possibly, if the punishment for sexual offenses was life imprisonment, there would be more of an incentive to abort the behavior before it moves to the stage of abuse or rape. But then again, since when has our criminal justice system actually asked criminals to serve their sentences? The system is flawed. Prisons are overcrowded. There is no easy fix to this problem.
Children, simply by right of being children, should be protected.
How can we best protect them? What are your thoughts?

I love how some of you think you're so righteous and so all knowing when if fact you are clueless, ignorant and obviously a pawn for anyone to lead you by the nose especially the media. This crap has been going on since the age of time "There is nothing new under the sun" The hypocrisy the worst of the worst has all the stones to throw. You are all guilty of a sex offense in one way, multiple ways or worse you just haven’t been caught but I got another type of news flash for ya, we are all caught, we are all being observed.
Do you have any clue or THINK about the infinite amount of possibilities that could of occurred when a person committed a “sex offense.” The issue is sex offenders “Human Beings” are placed into one lump, one category. “Sex Offender” Doesn’t matter the “tier” they’re placed in, they are regarded as scum, totally perverted social mishaps who murder, rape, exploit, molest, manipulate children.
Not everyone who has done something selfish, stupid, irrational or temporarily lost their minds is going to murder, rape or molest a child. I’m so sick of this absolute paraf’ingnoia you’re making peoples lives WORSE than you can even fathom, that’s how deep your ignorance is. When you see a problem from 20,000 feet ya don’t go and judge or have an opinion like a parrot! Set your opinions in stone from a story or a piece of “breaking news” you just happened to come across. Society’s issues are not to be handled from 20,000 feet from clueless, emotionally irrational, self-indulgent hypocritical people.
How about this, I believe many people like you should all move to an island, “The Island of the Self-Righteous” and make Bill Oreilly your king. You’ll be safe there, take your kids your families and get out. O0oo The Sex Offenders are taking over!

I wonder what would happen if we put all the thousands of GI's who had sex with underage bar girls in Viet Nam on the Registry. Boy, that would kill the whole thing. There would be thousands more listed. Oh, sorry, it is ok for US troops to rape and pillage as long as it is not on our soil. Think about it.

Everyone jumps to the conclusion that because someone has been convicted as a sex offender then they are one. Has it ever crossed any of your minds that some (not all obviously but some) of these convictions could have been caused by a vindictive ex-spouse or ex-significant other. Believe it or not it happens all the time. The system is so quick to judge that an innocent person has absolutely NO chance of defending themselves. If a charge is made they are automatically stuck with the title of "sex offender".
I do agree that people who truly are sex offenders should be severely punished for their crimes but I also have seen with my own eyes the horrible trauma that can be caused by hateful individuals that completely ruins an innocent individuals life forever. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous (not registered) on February 28, 2007 at 11:27 am
It practically takes an act of God to get someone arrested AND convicted as a child molester or rapist. I know there are some cases where false allegations were made. I would rather err on the side of the innocent. Once arrested, the perp has more rights than you do.
We have several choices.
1. Mandatory death sentence for first conviction
2. Probation for first conviction, mandatory death sentence for second conviction
3. Mandatory life sentence for first conviction
4. Probation for first conviction, mandatory life sentence for second conviction
5. Mandatory chemical castration for the men...not sure what to do about the women (or did you forget there are mothers who molest their children or assist their husbands or boy friends in molesting their children)
6. Mandatory life time parole so that they can be tracked.
7. Mandatory micro-chipping for permanent tracking whether off parole or not
Actually...I favor the death sentence...cheaper on society and the most important part: NO MORE VICTIMS!
I am tired of all the bleeding heart liberal tree hugging simpletons who want to save these people.
They made a choice. Their choice affected the lives of INNOCENT people..forever.
Anyone who harms animals, children or the elderly should be shot on sight.
And that's how I see it and that is WHY I am no longer in the Sex Offender Treatment Field. (I worked as a counselor intern for an agency contracting with the State of Texas for paroled S.O. Therapy...what a joke)

To the person asking about dating a sex offender and their being around children. I am divorced in Texas and have children. A common practice by MY attorney, the divorce decree states that if the child is going to be around a sex offender the other parent MUST be notified and if this does not happen the parent dating the S.O. can loose custody and visitation rights. You can ask for this documentation to be put in place even if you are not divorced.

I felt stupid. I thought my daughter had found her perfect man. Finally. They were together for 3-4 years. They came to visit and spent the night in my home with my younger children in the home. What a nice, polite man he was. Respectful and very helpful. HE IS ON DEATH ROW NOW!!! Turns out he had been molesting and killing little girls since 1989!!! He was finally caught in 2004. I spoke to the authorities about my stupidity and they told me that most of these guys come off as good people. I was assured it was not my fault that I could not tell he was a child rapist and killer.

re: killer in the house:
That sounds almost unbelievable. See! He wasn't on the registry, was he? Looks like this registry is not working as it was intended. Again, the SOR registry does NOT make the public "safe". This is why it is a waste of time and money. We need some other type of public awareness. Like: Parents checking out who these guys are coming home with your daughters.

It is simple, the punishment must be such that it prevents one from doing it.
If running a stop sign was a $3,000 fine, how many people would run them?
Tough laws will be put in place when it happens to a politicians child.

Please remember that some of these registered sex offenders were not guilty of the crimes they were charged for.
I do not believe that someone who has served their full sentance in jail continue their punishment by being required to register. We do not require murders who get out of jail to register, or wear a license plate or ankle bracelet. Then why should sex offenders who have paid their dues by serving their full sentance in jail be required to notify the public their whereabouts. Do you know if any murders are living in your neighborhood?
They should be able to be productive citizens in life unless they have committed this offense more than once.
You are committing some of these people to a unproductive life when in some cases they had sex as a young adult with their girlfriend.
Best Regards,

I think there should be someway to let people know if an sex offender is after little girls, boys, women or men and if he molest, rapes or harasses the person!!! or if they just like pics!! on the other hand I personaly think if someone molest or rapes a child they should be given the injection!!!! and if they rape an adult then cut off the offending parts and let them loose so the genral public can take care of them in what ever way they see fit with out goverment interference!!!! as for the porn and pics well. the point is why should my taxes be raised to pay for these dirtbags to be feed and sheltred when I have kids to feed and take care of plus keep safe from these scum baggs? when did they become more important then my kids? When did there right and freedom and life become more valued them my own kids? What happened to the goverments Prioritys?
I think it is bad enough that USA spends more money on a cure for baldness then heart disease and cancer reseach put together!!! its bad enough that the goverment spends more on prisoner then kids in school!!!
but no they are passing bills so you cant smoke in public and any thing with God is being taken off the TV and Radio!!! HA like saying God and Smokeing are bigger crimes then sex offenders on the street or killers killing people or drunks driving!!!!
I am not to fond of religon any of them but when the goverment thinks its the biggest crime then I HAVE A BIG BIG PROBLEM WITH IT!!!!!
I am not a smoker but I dont see this as important either!!!!!!
PRIORITIES PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

Paid their dues? This isn't the American Legion folks, these are our children we are talking about. So okay some have been faulsly accused, do you want to put your child in a room and find out which ones did it and which ones did not? And what is this, that some may have made a mistake? there are no mistakes in assaulting children. To even think sexually about a child even for a second should be a crime. Any of you who think they should get a second chance after one incident, should be ashamed of themselves. Would you trust them to stay at your house with your children? Wake up people if we do not protect our children no one will.

I just had a pedophile arrested for failure to register. he had served 10 years in indiana, moved here--and served 4 more. He has tried to seduce my 14 year old nephew. bond was only 15 grand. And i bet he walks free to find next victim.

Regardless of whether the offender is on the streets or in jail they should be on the website. I was engaged to a sex offender for 3 years, knew it from the start, he was very honest and upfront about it. I chose to believe his story tha him and his underage gf were caught having sex by her parents. Well after 3 years of trusting him and standing up for those people who just lost their head for a moment and had sex with a minor, I learned my lesson. He got mad at me and raped me. None of the offenders should be labeled any different because it seems minor. A sex offense no matter what is still a sex offense. The victum is still hurt and may never recover. And the importance of the crime of each one of the offenders should be on the website and kept up to date. My attacker's site isstill not up to date 4 years later. If he was out today to have some other poor unsuspecting girl to prey on, she would have no idea of the madness that is still in him.

It doesn't take an act of Congress to get get imprisoned, lose freedoms, and become accused of a sex offense. Words are harmful in this society we live in. Can you imagine being accused of a sex offense simply because someone knows how the "system" works? Just words can do the damage, and they don't even have to be based in fact. Sad? Yes.
I don't condone sex offenders. But people are losing sight of the fact that you should STILL look after your children. You can't be protected from every danger. The anger I read in these posts amounts to nothing more than mob mentality.
Get facts and take the time to learn the situation before you recommend "injection, castration", etc. etc. Just think, someone can tell a sex offense LIE about you, and then you'll be singing a different tune. Watch your back, and be very very careful. It CAN happen to you.

Do you have children? Would you leave them in a room with a sex offender because its said that he was falsely accused? It is sad the fact that you can't trust even the justice system to know who is or isn't guilty, and the fact that a person can get probation for their first assault. But the fact is we can't save our children or ourselves by hovering over them. I had a hovering mother but you know several different occasions men took advantage of me. It happens anyway everyday. As far as getting the story before making any judgements or decisions its not as easy to get the facts as that. There are so many different sides to a story and it all depends on who you choose to believe. Of course then there is the case file, but how do you get that released just because you want. And if you're lucky you get the whole story in the case file, because so many finally, after wasting our taxpayers money, they are given a deal. Which leads to charges and time being lowered. So tell me how do you suggest we get the truth about these people.

Our country needs to do something to protect our children. As a parent I am deeply involved in what my kids do and know everyone at every house they go to. They are young enough that I can still do this. But as they get older it is going to get harder to control their envirnoments. If the government would electonically monitor all released sexual predators and also chemically castrate them then the majority of repeat offenses would not happen. We are too busy trying to still think of these monsters as people. I waqs molested as a child but a boyfriend of my mother's. I SO wish someone had been able to help me--this guy had molested his own sister and she never told, had molested a cousin and she told and they told him "No! We don't do that!" and sent him on his merry way--no jail time, nothing! I never told when I was abused by him until years and years later. I feel guilty wondering how many kids he has harmed since me! I would like to think it stopped with me but I can guarantee it didn't.

How do you convince someone that a sex offender is potentially dangerous no matter what their age? I'm just so frustrated at the way some people still think. I have a great uncle that molested kids (mostly family) for 30 years that we know of. At age 74, a victim finally told the whole family and it all came out. Still, some relatives let him around their kids, and even let him babysit alone! He was turned into the police when he ignored warnings to stay away from kids. They found over 50 kiddy porn pictures he took himself and kept, and now he's on trial, with a bond that says he can't be around kids. These family members are still letting him visit the kids, and even bringing the kids to visit him. The police want to charge the parents with abuse, and the parents and many older relatives are furious with the victims for not just "letting it go", and blame them for calling the police repeatedly (which they never have). One threatened to burn a victims house down. Is this normal???? I'm having a hard time accepting that it's the 2000's and people think this way.

“TOWARDS MORE EFFECTIVE SEX OFFENSE LEGISLATION
Facts Versus Fears… Believing Versus Knowing”
MYTH #1 — “SEX OFFENDERS WILL ALWAYS KEEP OFFENDING”
Most recently, the Bureau of Justice Statistics published a study which tracked 9,700 sex offenders for three years, 2001-2004. Their findings included:
♦ Only 5.3% of these people imprisoned for sex crimes were rearrested for a subsequent sex offense.
♦ Where a child was involved, the rearrest rate dropped to 3.3%
♦ Between two adults, the sexual reoffense rate was 2.2%
A more multifaceted meta-analysis was updated in 2004 by the Office of Canada’s Solicitor General, Karl Hanson. This analysis involved 95 studies tracking 31,000 sex offenders. These studies had an average follow-up period of 5 years and found:
♦ The recidivism rate for once-caught pedophiles was 12.7%
♦ The overall once caught recidivism rate (includes adult victims) was 13.7%
Some of the data we reported on a decade ago: (graphic not included on this printed version)
Contrary to widespread public belief, once-caught sex offenders actually have a very low recidivism rate. With or without treatment, more than 87% of the once caught do not reoffend with another sex crime. With treatment, the likelihood of recidivating is even lower.
In contrast, according to the 2004 U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics study, 69% of all criminals go back to prison for other types of crime and do so within five years. Over a longer period of time, other FBI statistics show that 74% of all other types of offenders are back in prison. When that figure is compared to only 2% to 13%, the recidivism rate for sex offenders in reality is only a tiny fraction of what it is for other types of crime. This is not what the public believes and certainly not what they have heard. As the trackings of tens of thousands clearly attest, most people learn from their mistakes, and sex offenders are no exception. Just getting caught changes the behavior of most individuals.

When Megan’s and Jacob’s Laws were originally passed, there was a decided lack of empirical evidence to support or question the effectiveness of these laws. We now find state and local governments, for easy political gain and against the advice of experts in criminal justice, behavior therapy, and law enforcement, attempting to a write harsher law than their neighboring cities or states.
This trend is now banishing an entire class of people as we find new laws that exclude EVERYONE on the registries, regardless of charge, from living within in these supposed safety zones.
The overwhelming evidence and statistics, as provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, state correctional studies, local law enforcement, and treatment experts, show that residency restrictions or safety (proximity) zones have not proven to enhance public safety and in fact have let to unintended consequences for communities and the innocent family members of offenders.
I ask you to consider the following: (1) with regards to recidivism, DOJ and other studies done since 1994, shows sex offenders commit another crime, of any kind, at a rate of just thirteen percent, while those convicted of property theft reoffend at an average of 75%. People convicted of drunk driving will reoffend at a rate of 51%, while a convicted murderer will reoffend at a rate of 41%. Ex-convicts with a non-sex offense charge are 87% more likely to commit a sex offense than a convicted sex offender in therapy is. (2) The FBI-UCR, National Crime Victimization Survey reveals that only 23% of sex crimes are against someone under 18; and the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that predators represent around three percent of all sex offenders and child killers are less than one percent of all offenders. (3) Over 40% of sex crimes committed against someone under 18 are by a juvenile; most are consensual sex by teenagers, others are older siblings acting out against a relative. Additionally, a study by the DOJ showed the 19% of online teenagers who were solicited for sex, were done so by other teenagers around 70% of the time, NOT adults.

In a statement regarding the effectiveness of Iowa’s Sex Offender Registry and Proximity laws, Sgt. Bryce Smith, who has charge of monitoring the registry in Scott County (Iowa) said; “If the 2,000-foot rule had been in effect 10 years ago, I can’t think of a single case from our files that would have been any different.”
Recognize these laws only encourage offenders and former offenders to abscond to keep their jobs or their families together. Victims, spouses, and parents of intra-familial offenders will be reluctant to report abuse, fearing decades or a lifetime on the registries and progressively more repressive banishment laws. Please remember, the victims and offenders of unreported intra-familial offenses, who do not receive therapy, create opportunities for more offenses and victims. This will not create a safer society, and indeed, has the opposite affect.
Like the Mondale Act, and Megan's Law, the Adam Walsh Act subsists on federal dollars. States not in compliance lose grant monies. This is the reason we have seen increases in the registries, they are a cash cow for state and local governments. The fact is these registries have forced the true monsters underground (remember John Couey?) where they cannot be monitored. Proximity laws – safety zones – serve to only protect kids in a limited area where the sex offender resides. Thus, a molester can travel 20 miles down the road and re-molest.
I invite you to read The Impact of Residency Restrictions on Sex Offenders and Correctional Management Practices: A Literature Review; by Marcus Nieto, Senior Research Specialist and Professor David Jung, Public Law Research Institute, Hastings Law School. First of all they are not evil and they are not monsters! Some of them are are innocent but had to plea out so they would not get jail or prison time so they could be with there families! Did you know that half of the sex offenders out there are innocent! The judicial system needs to do some more homework on cases like these!

I agree with you. Not all of these people are giulty. HELLO people kids lie and like to tell stories so they can get out of a home were they are made to mind or can't have things their way. SO is it far to these good people to have to plea guilty and be on parrole just so they can stay and take care of their families and be with them. I mean really, what would you do if some kid blamed you tomorrow. Which choice would you make? Because you know as well as I do,(because you are doing it now) that when a jury sees the words sex offender of a CHILD that they are going to believe the words of the child just to be safe. SO come on think about it ??? HOW MANY OF THESE MEN AND WOMEN ARE REALLY GUILTY??? AND WHAT CHOICE WOULD YOU MAKE???? FAMILY OF PRISON?????????
In all honesty in our State that is why they have a child talk to a specialist first, then they go for a interview with another (Diffrent) specialist, have it taped and have a Dective look over it, re-view it with some more Law sprcialists before they do anything to see if the child, or children are not telling the truth. But even if they pass all this, they still have to have ev... in order to arrest the person whoms being inv... They can not take the childs, or childrens word because of people lyeing about being molested, or abused in some way, that is why they do it this way. In a way it's sadd because why would a child lye? esp.. when they are at the age they know no wrong, nor about what even sex is? But In another way they have to be sure. But with out the ev... or a medical exam really showing facts, there is nothing they can do. I personally think the Laws need to stop looking at the ages where the teenagers know what yes means, and no means, and the parents who find out their teenager was active in a sexual way, get madd and have the other pro... as a Offender, to me as a mother of having a son molested at 9 years old, that is not fair to the teenager, he is ruined for life and why? Well why is she not labled, she was willing too? Really they need to stop useing them as examples, and start useing the real offenders, and preditors out there, give them what they are putting into the ones falsely accused, because being in the court systems (Alot) These poor teenagers are getting the harsher deals then the real as@-Holes are!!!! I hope one day the Laws will change some how, but until then things are only going too get worse, and our children will still be violated by true Preditors, because they are not keeping them where they should be. what makes a person do this to a child
Posted by: Oldtimer on August 01, 2007 at 07:37 am
It is a very complicated issue. (IMHO) It usually comes down to a form of "control". A child can be controlled when you cannot control adults around you. Many other reasons, also.

My son is now 26. When he was 17 he had consensual sex with another young woman. As a matter of fact she voluntarily went into his bedroom as he was asleep and offered it to him. We knew this happened the morning after because she bragged about finally getting to have sex (a nicer term than she used) with my son. Her mother, out of jealosy of me dating her exhusband, turned my son in 6 months later. SIX MONTHS LATER!! In that same year this young girl had sex with another young man, probably one of many, became pregnant. Her mother never turned him in. Who is the victim here? They have gone on about their lives like nothing has happened...not a care in the world. Meanwhile, it has taken almost 10 years for my son to finally get his lfe straightened out, although he will have to register until he is 35 and yes is considered a "sex offender". This is a wonderful young man, never did anything to anyone, not a violent person and certainly not a preditor/petifyle. He lives a very quiet life and has to watch every move he makes in fear that he will be accused of doing something he didn't, which has has since this has happened. He is always having to defend himself and making sure he has an alibi every where he goes. He is no different than alot of men out there who are very accusing. Alot of men would have done the same thing and did . Everyone listed on the SO site is not a predator and probably just made a very bad judgement call. Unfortunately, I wished he would have said no when she offered it to him...

I want to know how a register sex offender can be an assistant to a pastor at a church and be able to be behind closed doors with children?
Posted by: Oldtimer on August 08, 2007 at 10:00 pm
mother of offender: How old was the girl? The courts look at rape as rape. There is no reasoning behind the present system. We know kids have sex and will continue to, however, what we need to happen is to get this present system to only monitor the dangerous individual. Not someone who made a mistake once in his/her life and has made ammends for their behavior. Please speak to your legislature about this problem as you see it. That is the only way this foolishness will be modified. Good luck
Posted by: Oldtimer on August 08, 2007 at 10:07 pm
marbles63. If you KNOW this man is an offender and is with children alone, then you need to speak to authorities about it. Authorities outside of the church. (IMHO) Church groups sometimes protect their own to avoid outside intervention. He may not have been caught at the "act", so he continues to get away with it. The laws are fairly strict on this business (abuse), nowadays. If you were molested by this man, speak up!....before another person is hurt. Priests and pastors can be sex offenders too! I known several people sexually abused while at a religious camp for children.

I'm glad to see that some folks realize that all the people on Sexual Preditor lists are not actually guilty. My Son was accused of penetrating a 9 year old with his finger in a swimming pool. He was throwing the child in the air and horseplaying around. He was 24 at the time. At the time she told the babysitter that he had "touched her bottom". The babysitter was watching them playing in the pool. She told the Mother and the Mother said " Oh she is always making up this stuff, even about a family member". 12 years later the girl saw my Son in a bar and had him arrested. Long story short, he accepted a plea deal from the state because his attorney felt this "beautiful, puppy eyed girl" could convince a jury that he actually penetrated her with his finger and the lawyer is not allowed to mention the fact to a jury if he is found guilty that he will be sent to prison for 25 years. The plea deal included lifetime registration as a sexual preditor and 30 years probation. He accepted the deal out of fear because of the stigmatism put on sexual offences by the Jessica's Law. His life is now ruined. He lost his job, can't find another one, can't support his children and it's about bankrupted his parents in legal fee's. Jessica's Law is a good law for the repeat offender and the criminally insane offender, but it's a travesty to justice for the wrongfully accused. Someone has to take a hard look at what is going on in each case and not put all sex crimes under one blanket. My Son is innocent of penetrating this girl with his finger but is quilty of horse play in a swimming pool where there was another person present and someone else watching. He should not be so afraid of the law that he can not trust the judgement of 12 people. Please folks look at each case with an open mind. This took place in the state of Florida and the state has now passed a law that any juvenile who ends up in court for a sex crime, will be registered and picture and address ,posted with adults. Make sure your children are not playing Doctor or have a feel out behind the barn. If the girls parents decide to call the police your son could have his life ruined in a heart beat.

I recently found out that a friend of mine is expecting a baby and the same month that the father of the unborn child is a registerd sex offender. They are married and he has only said that he went to prison for drugs and that is not true at all. How do I tell her and her family, Can she loose her child when it is born?
Posted by: Oldtimer on August 14, 2007 at 03:25 pm
You have some complicated issues here. Possibly talking to a DHS worker at the state, would give you some answers. I think that some states are not letting an offender stay with children..even their own, and in other states, it is important to keep the family together. Not sure why you need to involve yourself with this marriage. I tend to think the girl knows what is up...however, (IMO) you had better be sure you can prove he is a sex offender before talking to her. Does he now register?
In reff. to the question of what should I tell her. I would tell her the truth on what you found out, but I would make sure you have the information in your hand so she would be able to see your telling the truth on the news you found out. I am not a expert or nothing in that nature, but I do not think she would end up not being able to care for her child with the States involement, unless she stayed in that situation knowing her child has a risk at possiable sexual abuse. But it depends on the leval of what he did as well, to be labled a Offender/Preditor. Unf... since he has not told her the truth of the real reason he was in prision, she will have alot of un-answered questions, and fears within herself when the truth comes out. She is pregnant, and her emotions are high already, the man she is shareing a baby with is a Offender of some sort, and she has not a clue of anything. She has the right to know the truth, esp.... since there will be a child here in the near furture.. Good Luck, and I hope things work out for the best of the family, and future. Tammmy (HexGirl)

Until we have a way to prove that someone actually committed a sex crime, we can not begin to think of using the death penalty as a deterent. My 31-year-old son was convicted of sexual assault of a child (2 counts) and improper relationship between an educator and a child in July. This was his first accusation and the only accuser was a 14-year-old girl that everyone in the school knew had a "crush" on him. He was able to prove that on the dates and times she named, it was not possible for the events to have happened. In fact, the case was going so poorly for the DA that she presented the girl as a rebuttal witness to "suddenly remember that she felt a very obvious mole on his back". When asked why this was not in her taped testimony with CAC or in her testimony in court earlier, she swore that she had mentioned it (but of course we all saw the video and listened in court and no mention had been made of it). So the defense asked her where the mole was located on my son and she pointed out the spot on her own body that would correspond with where it would be on his body. My son has MANY moles all over his body, but when he raised his shirt to the jury to show them the spot she had indicated, THERE WAS NO MOLE. And although all of the counts had the words "sexual intercourse" in them and the only testimony to that was from this accuser, the jury found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt on all counts. Imagine if this were a second time around and the evidence were circumspect at best. Would you really be in favor of the death penalty for someone like that?

This is an incedibly difficult thing to write.
I am cuurently going through aSexual offense allegation. A girl, 14, made an allegation against me in order to " get out of other trouble". People ask why teenager would lie. In todays media saturated society everyone can see the results and "benefits" of these types of allegations. She instantly stopped being a very bad teenager and became a victim; all misdeeds absolved. Visit any school and ask a teenage girl. They talk about this, they know the things to say, and whom to say them to.
We are giving this young, jealous, unstable group of young people the ultimate power to wreck peoples lives. We are constantly telling them they are adults, selling tjhem adult tings in an adult manner, convincing them that they hae the power of adults, then not holding them accountable for thier action. Be careful what you want in offender registration, Be careful what youadvocate in manditiry sentancing, be very careful with any children. You can be accused at any time, by any one. It takes NO PROOF, to ruin your life.An allegation is enoegh. In this media controled, highly charged and very political atmosphere I am fighting for my life. I am told that there is no way I am ever going to get a fair trial by a republican judge and a politicaly ambitious D.A. I become a notch in thier belts, at any cost.

Everyone of you that condemn sex offenders---someone in your family is just one bad decision away from being in the same position that the offenders are in. Then how will you feel when your family is subjected to the same treatment that you are calling for. Think about what you are saying---it is really easy to bash someone for making a mistake in their youth but is it fair to make them suffer all their lives. Every family that has had someone murdered in their family suffers the rest of their lives. Everyone that has been a victim of a robbery will have scars the rest of their lives. Everyone that has been a victim of any sort will have issues the rest of their lives but there is no other perpetrator of crimes that has to register or pay for the crimes they commit for the rest of their lives. I understand that every parent wants or should want to protect the children they have been intrusted with but as much as we would love for that to happen--it never will even if we have everyone that commits a crime register. There will always be those out there that have mental problems that will continue the crimes we so want to stop. That is part of the human race being who we are---this world is not perfect--never will be. We have to do our part to keep ourselves safe and making people register is not the answer unless they are violent.

Some of these people are not guilty of the crime, but are guilty of lack of funds to excape the court oppointed attorney which tells the offender that the only way out is to plead guilty so he can work on the next case.

If you were a 19 or 20 year old guy and meets a girl shaped like a woman and lies about her age and say shes 18, and is 16 or 17, should they be classified as those who molested those and prey on 5 year olds?

I am on the list, married with 4 kids we havehad to live in seedy motels, crime ridden areas, in vehicles. this has done damage to my kids yes my childern parents need to keep an eye on there kids, not rely on the corrupt goverment to protect there kids. It is your responsability to protect your kids. I know where my kids are at all the time where are yours at. These lists do not protect childern at all they protect the lawmakers period!!! I PERSONALLY THINK THEY SHOULD BE CATEGORIES.BECAUSE WHEN YOU HEAR SEX OFFENDER.WHATS THE FIRST THING THAT POPS IN YOUR MIND?( PREDATOR OR POEDOPHILE) WHEN IN REALITY NOT ALL SEX OFFENDERS ARE OUT THERE PREYING ON YOUNG KIDS (5 6 7 & 8YR. OLDS)THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT NEED HELP,THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT NEED TO BE IN PRISON. LOOK AT IT THIS WAY IF SOMEONE ABUSES A (15 OR 16 YR OLD CHILD) THE SYSTEM FEELS SYMPATHY.BUT IF THAT 15 OR 16 YR OLD COMMITS A CRIME.THEN WHAT WOULD THEY FEEL?(TO LOCK THEM A UP) WHY DON'T THEY FEEL SYMPATHY FOR THE CHILD THEN?

He was NOT convicted of the crime, but was encouraged to plead "no contest" to avoid a minimum 2 year jail sentence IF found guilty. He was given NO jail time, NO fines, but was put on probation for 6 years. This is legally NOT considered a sexually violent crime and he was NOT convicted. He completed his probation successfully 8 1/2 years ago. Since then there have not been any restrictions on how close he can go to schools or about spending time with children. He has had unsupervised standard visitation of his 2 children for the last 8 1/2 years. He only has to register as a sex offender for 18 more months...then he will be removed from the registry entirely.
I have children from a previous marriage that I have full custody of. I am a wonderful mother and could in no way be found to be "unfit". Could my ex succeed at gaining full custody of our children when I get married?
If he was to try to get custody now, he would not due to the past that haunts him, but once he is totally off the reg... and he no longer has to reg... he should have no problem with your future wants, but you might need an attorney's help through that, or get advise so you know where you stand in that type of question.

Though I do beleive that sex offenders should be given the chance at a quiet life and have the opportunity to redeem themselves, neighbors and other citizens should receive better notification of their presence.

There was a recent attempted buglary on my home. I live in the country. I moved out here for peace and quiet!!! My husband and I have 4 children ages 13, 12, 10 and 7-two boys and two girls. Whoever tried to break in actually used a professional tool to reem out my dead bolt. Obviouslyy, we have made a police report and they are watching our house to protect us. What concerns me the most is that we have 3 doors facing the outside. The one that was reemed out was right beside our girls' bedroom. I am very concerned, and my husband and I are now taking shifts at night to protect our children! I want some more protection! We have great officers (2) here, but they can only do so much!!!!

I am the parent of a child who was sexually molested by a guy who is now living in TX. My son was not the first. He was military and kept getting off on technicalities and he didn't with my son!! I made sure of it!! I saw a comment from a person saying how her friend was always being kicked out of his home because of him being a pedophile!! Just because they make you feel sorry for them doesn't mean they are innocent. The man who did this to my son was very good at playing the victim...my son was 12 and was threatened that I would be killed if he told!! I don't believe that 18 yr old boys who have sex with a 16 yr old should be on there, but I do believe that a 30 yr old male who has sex with a 12 yr old boy should be!!

i would like to know if an registered sex offender(aggrivated sexual assault of a child) in texas is allowed any type of visitation of a new born child, and if this child can be left in the same residence with said sex offender un-supervised? i couldnt immagine it being legal, and would just like to make sure of the texas law before pursuing this further.
Texas: Your law is Chapter 62, I believe at the following URL:

Whats funny is that you are focusing entirely on people who have been caught. What about the ones who haven't been? I kinda wonder how many of you that are so against sex offenders have actually committed a sexual offence yourself. Do you even know what are considered a sexual offense in the state of Texas? If you get caught twice peeing on the side of road (indecent exposure) you will have to register as a sex offender. So before you start judging and pushing legislation you just might legislate yourself into being the next person to be registering as a sex offender. It would be a safe bet at least 75% of the people who are pushing tougher laws on sex offenders have committed some sort of sexual assault. Ponder on your past you might be next.

I am the mother of a 19 yr old son, that is being charged with Agg Assault of a minor child under 14 yrs.
He was dating this girl, who by ALL counts fooled my son and evryone around them. She stated that she was 17yr old and graduating this May. They were dating, going out till late hours of the night. They were to be engaged and move in together after graduation.
Turns out that she lied at first by stating that she was 15 yrs. Therefore my son broke it off with her. 2 months later, after he started dating someone else. She tried with her all to get him back by stating that she was pregnant. Thats where this all came to the truth. Her mom takes her to a clinic, who tells the mom that she HAS TO REPORT this to the police. ( THE GIRL WAS NEVER PREGNANT)..... Now the facts are that she is 14 and has given 5 different reports to the police. He mother has called to apologize and tried to drop the charges, but the state has already picked them up.
Now my son, cannot find a job.. Not even at a fast food place... and will have to register as a SEX OFFENDER.... and this young girlwho LIED and her mother who allowed her daughter to stay out late and date my son..knowing how old she really was).. They get to go about their lives as if nothing happened...
While.. My son and our whole family will be affected by this for the rest of our lives....
NOT FAIR!!!
The laws should be different in teenagers having consentual sex with eachother!!! He shouldnt be classified as a Sex Offender..
I wonder if your son has any legal moves that he can take against the girl or her family. No one has done this that I am aware of, but I wonder if a case can be brought against them for fraud and/or deception. Now that might be a wake up call to the families that let minor females who decieve and dress like they are 21. Just a thought. Of course the law says he should know better. Guess men need to varify ages of their woman in some kind of "registry?"

Oldtimer...
I appreciate your comment... My husband and I are going to try and pursue a civil lawsuit against her and her mother for decieption. I do put blame on her mother for allowing her to stay out all hours of the night. The mothers excuse for all this was that she assumed her daughter was with her 18 yr old sister and the sister's 35 YEAR OLD BOYFRIEND.....( Whom they would double date with) This little girl had my whole family fooled.. Going to church with us and coming over for lunch and dinner...
I am also a mother of a 21 yr daughter, who I didn't let date until she was 18 yrs old. And my 15 yr old daughter is not let out of our eye sight.
I was amazed to read how many teenager boys have been put in the same situation as my son.. If you pull up a list of the sexual offenders in an area.. and read the dates of the offense and the teenage girl.. they are all close in age. Some of these boys are now grown men and are still having to register.. That is HORRIBLE!!!
I pray that the mothers out there of young girls will realize the damage that is brought upon these kids by allowing hteir daughters to act like gworn women.....

Im 18 years old I made the biggest mistake of my life. Im not branded a sexual offender yet. I dreamed of getting a job, having a family, living a normal life. But i know that wont happen. Yes I did do wrong but having to live my life being known as a "sexual offender" or "monster". It hurts knowing I have one life and this is how im gonna end it. Suicide thoughts run through my head I wonder if i take the whole bottle of pills it wont hurt it will just end thats what I want for it to end. Why would I mess up my life like this. I know i didnt do anything but everyone belives the same old story where the young girl is innocent. Im 18 Im still a kid just cause the law says Im an adult doesnt mean I really grew up to be an adult they just treat me like one. I was suppose to graduate this year but Why would I walk anyway I losing all my friends. I rather be dead than be branded as a Monster. Im not a monster sure you can say I am but im not. I want a normal life thats all everyone only gets one chance to live a life just one why would i ruin my one life. True its my fault but its like death right. People will never hire a sexual offender, People will always hate a sexual offender. Death is one of my option. To live a life being branded a sexual offender having people hate you so much and they will never understand they just know that you did something wrong but never understand it. Im sorry to everyone. I know alot must hate me I always had a problem I cant be around when people hate me. I know thats what is coming if i am to become a sexual offender I rather die young with the world not knowing who i am. Than die an old man with the world just hating me and worrying if i live next to them.
onlydeath: Yes, you made a mistake and that is why so many of us are fighting to stop aspects of the registry that destroy lives of the offender, at least the broadcasting your face all over the place, with a scarlett letter. (be sure to read the book) We need to protect and also help the victims. No one wins with abuse..
As for the suicide thoughts: (IMHO) understandable with depression. You must understand, that suicide is considered, because it is the ONLY thing you can "control" right now. Its not a realistic option. And actually, hurts those that have chosen to stand by you. Why do that? To leave now, when there is so much to learn, is a waste of a life.
Another thing: no one tells an eighteen yr old that EVERYONE makes mistakes and in some cases, Big Mistakes. It is part of living and most people will not tell you their dark secrets or big mistakes, because they are not proud of them. You have already learned an important thing in abuse: mistake. It is the guy who doesn't think they did anything wrong, that we need to fear. (IMO) the first thing you need to do, is to get some help. I do not mean the school counsellor. I mean a therapist who knows something about sexual abuse so that he/she can help you rehabilitate. As for your case: many offenders are plea bargaining to do time, but be kept off the registry. It can be done. Be very careful what you sign or cop a plea to. (IMO) Do not agree to what you have not done. From your position, I'm sure you don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. There is daylight, so stick around a while to see it and get help now. Ask around, there are free agencies in many places , if you are broke. Good luck with this.

My son was 24 years old in 1988 when he was convicted of sex abuse with his 2 daughters, one was 2,the other was 5yrs,old.His wife at that time was laid up in the hospital for 3 months pregnant with triplets. She wrote my son a letter that stated if he did not quit running around on her,she would put him in a place where she knew he couldn't. Well, this was a eye opener for all of us who knew my son,and knew without a doubt that he didn't do this. The judge disreguarded anything in my son's favor and gave him 40 years. He is still in tdc. When he gets out he has to live with this till he dies, which may not be long because he contacted a deadly virus while in there. All because of a jealous wife that couldn't let go.

I am a sex offender. I made a stupid choice when I was 13. Because of Texas's statue of limitations the State did not pick up charges till after I turned 16 and I could be prosecuted as an adult. The judge originally gave me a 25 year sentence for having inappropriate contact with my sister who was 6 at the time. My lawyer got it down to 10-years. I did all 10-years in prison. I have been out for 4-months now. Because of the registry I can not find a job anywhere as hard as I have tried. I have a college education that I earned while in prison. Yet because of the registry and my stupid mistake at 13 I am haunted by my past. I have applied for and been denied jobs at Fry's electronics (Having a criminal record), Kroger as a bagger(They said I did not meet their qualifications), Walmart 3rd shift stock person(No return call after interview and background check), etc... Because of my age and the age of the victim the charge was automatically an Aggravated offense even though there was no violence of any sort. I wish the states would differentiate between a juvenile and and adult offender. Because of this lack of classification I myself feel that my life is basically over and not worth living with all the BS that I have to face and deal with.
Josh: It sounds like you are doing what you can to get your life back on track. I suggest you also look for a job in the building trades or in a job where many working on the job, have screwed up themselves in the past. I guess what I am saying is that sometimes the person you work for has his own sins/former incarceration and will hire you according to how you have pulled yourself together. It is who you are now and not what you were then, that is important. A recent PBS program on stress says that the stress you are under (registry) will add to your medical problems and shorten your life. Interesting the state claims it is not punishment...I guess you need to use more energy to make your life successful and positive. This registry will fall apart within a decade due to its punishment (double jeopardy) factor, I believe.

I think that the country has gone wild and out of control when it comes to this issue. Why do we NOT have e registry for convicted murderers ,rapist, gang menbers that are convicted of violent crimes. If we are to be so mad as to have to have a sex offender registry then we should have to REGISTER ALL OFFENDERS ESPECIALLY ,VIOLENT ONES.This county has gone crazy where children are concerned. A teacher stands the chance of being ruined by a lying child ,which happens all of the time. DALLAS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS IMPLEMENTING A NEW POLICY WHERE CHILDREN WHO LIE ON THEIR TEACHERS CAN BE PUNISHED.It is about time. Many a person has been put on this list because of someone lying on them and then they get pushed by the District Attorneys office to Plea Bargain to keep from putting their families through more hell on earth.Money going out for a defense attorney and no control over how long it continues ,their life is ruined and they get beat down ,then they are told Plea out . Not all people on this list are guilty of this crime or any other crime. We need to stand up for the Constitutional rights of these offenders or put a list in place that forces ALL VIOLENT OFFENDERS TO REGISTER. fOR GOODNESS SAKES WHAT HAPPENED TO PARENTS BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR CHILDREN? What about an axe murderer next door without one knowing it. When a person pays their debt to society they should be allowed to live their life in PEACE.

As a registered sex offender, i would like to clarify a few things, as others have on this website. The one post was perfectly right when it says that the sex registry does not differentiate pedophiles, or sexual predators from people in high school who had sex with another high school girl who wasnt 17 yet. High school girls have consensual sex every single day in this world, and some of them lie about their age in order to be with an older, more mature guy. This was the circumstance in my case, and it wasnt the first time i had been lied to about age either. Now of course i ask for identification before i do anything with someone, which is a shame. Do not judge someone you dont even know, and have no idea of what actually happened. That is just plainb ignorant and uneducated. How many murderers are on death row who are innocent, and have eebn exoneraated and set free? The justice system is flawed and imperfect, and will always be. This is what narrow minded, arrogant people need to understand...
