Here are the statistics: According to the US Department of Justice, an average serial child molester may have as many as 400 victims in his lifetime.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychological Association [APA}, 1994, a pedophile is a person who, over at least a six-month period,has recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children.

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (Venes, Biderman, Adler et al. 2005), describes pedophilia as an unnatural fondness and desire for sexual relations with a child.

According to the US Dept. of Justice (2003), approximately 4,300 child molesters were released from prisons in 15 states in 1994. An estimated 3.3% of these 4,300, were rearrested for another sex crime against a child within 3 years of release from prison. Nearly 70% of child sex offenders have between one and nine victims; at least 20% have 10-40 victims, and an AVERAGE serial child molester may have as many as 400 victims in his lifetime (Chandler, et al. n.d.)

Some people feel it is unfair to imprison the pedophile to life. Unfortunately, there are children who can no longer speak for themselves: Jessica Lunsford, nine years old, was raped and murdered by John Couey, a repeat sex offender. He lived across the street from Jessica. Joseph Duncan kidnapped Shasta and Dylan Groene after he murdered their mother and older brother. Both children endured repeated sexual abuse. Shasta survived the ordeal, but Joseph Duncan murdered Dylan. Joseph Duncan committed these unspeakable crimes one month after his release from prison for sexually abusing two boys. Megan Kanda, seven years old, was raped and murdered by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas, who served two prior convictions for child molestation. Christopher Michael Barrios, six years old, was tortured, raped, and murdered by repeat sex offenders David and George Edenfield (father and son) and their wife/mother.

These children made national headlines after their deaths; all because the system failed and another repeat offender re-entered society.

How's that for statistics?

To Lindsay: I do not understand....what do you mean not all sex offenders are dangerous and not all sex offenders harm others?

A sex offender IS dangerous to children. Do you think this feels only like a little smack on the hand for a child? Think about it. They do harm. Mentally and physically for the rest of the life of their victims.

I don't understand where some of you are coming from, it's beyond me.

To the person who posted "Do unto others"......In my lifetime, I have lied, I have cheated, I have NEVER been violent, I have lusted for another ADULT of the opposite sex. I have NEVER hurt a child, I have NEVER molested nor had a desire to molest a child. So if you believe we should do unto others, does that mean you wish that as a child you were raped, sodomized, beaten, threatened, tortured, or murdered? Your post makes no sense.

NEVER will I forgive or give a second chance to a child molester/murderer. They should NEVER have a second chance again, because they will molest again. They just don't always get caught.
