My son is in the same situation. It is sad that young people are being placed on a lifetime registry for having consensual sex. Our family is heartbroke. He had never been in trouble before. The girl he had sex was 15 and he was 22. The girl admitted to authorities that it was consensual. Her mother had previously filed on another young man for also having sex with her daughter. My son was the second young man filed on by this mother.

Two years ago my son had charges filed on him by an angry mother for having consensual sex with her 15 year old daughter. He was the second young man filed on by this mother for having sex with her daughter.

His first baby will be delivered in Aug of this year. He is required to be on the registry for the rest of his life. He wil never be allowed to be the kind of parent that he needs to be to this baby. He cannot attend school functions with his family. He can't take them to church and his child will surely face a lifetime of harassment, ridicule and embarassment.

My son had never been in trouble before. I wish someone could explain to me how any of this fair?

Yes, he broke the law and he is serving jailtime and probation. Is that not enough for one mistake. I think so. I am very angry and hurt about all of this. I believe that everyone should deserve a second chance if they prove themselves deserving of a second chance.

I just don't know what it will take to end the witch hunt. Lawyers won't fight it and lawmakers are too afraid to question it and do what is right about it.

My son and others on similar circumstances are not a threat or danger to society. They will never be allowed to prove it. If you are an adult 18 or older and have a minor girlfriend or boyfriend be careful. If you are having consensual sex, you are by definition of the law a sex offender.

Most people think that all sex offenders rape and kill little children. This is not so.

I understand the reason behind the registry. I just wish there was a way to be removed after you have been proven not to be a danger.

Eagle, It appears to me that you have a first hand knowledge of sex offense law. I wish there was someone who could help in trying to get our lawmakers to take a look at the laws again for review. My son was never engaged in a violent sex act. He had consensual sex with a 15 year old girl. Yes, he is an adult (23 at time of offense) and he broke the law, but he is not a predator or pedophile. He is serving his time and must register for a lifetime. I wish there was some way for each case to reviewed and the offender be deemed a danger or not by the professional. I am sick of witch hunts and people who are ignorant of the facts.

I never thought about a sex offender as one who had consensual sex, but now I know. I also know now that it can happen very easily. My husband is 6 years older than I am. I am thankfuly that the laws were not as they are today.

Young men beware. There are many young girls out there who will lie about their age and you will not know any different.

What can we do as family members to get our lawmakers to review and revise the sex offender laws to make them more fair. It is ridiculous for our oh so intelligent lawmakers to lump all offenders into one category without any consideration to assesing a danger level of each offender. We all want to protect the small children, but one mistake between boyfriend and girlfriend or urinating on the side of the road does not make someone a menace to society. Get real.

Did you know?
While drugs and alcohol are often involved in sexual assaults, drugs and alcohol do not cause sexual offenses to occur. Rather, drug and alcohol use may be a disinhibitor for the offender, while being under the influence may increase a potential victim's vulnerability.
