craig.. sorry to burst your bubble here, but I dont think YOU know what your talking about. The law is the law and if you broke it, you have to suffer the consequences. You dont know everyones criminal history the way law enforcement does and not every sex offender is going to tell you the truth about the crime they committed. I know a lot of people think that its not fair for a person to have to register for the rest of their lives because of a mistake, like the girl lying about her age. But think of it this way.. most states 16 is the legal age. If the victim was under the age of 16, and the offender is between the age of 18-21, the victim can be charged as a youthful offender and only have to register for 10 years and it is not public knowledge. Youthful offenders still have to register but they have no restrictions other than notifications. This gives them a second chance. Now if the offender was over 21, then they are old enough and smart enough to understand what the law is and what the consequences of their actions would be. I think the law is pretty lenient on sex offenders considering a lot of them dont even comply with the sex offender laws. They skip state and avoid registration. All I can say is .. stupid hurts.

to person from florida.. this guy will eventually be registered in the stae of florida. To not register is a felony.. so he is most likely going to jail for a while. As far as him going back to work.. I hope he got fired.. but if he didnt get fired, whether or not he can work there depends on his crime. If he commited a crime against a child of a certain age (not sure for florida).. but ours is 12 and under.. then he would not be allowed to be so many feet from children. He can not reside, or work so many feet from a school or daycare. I dont think you have anything to worry about. If you are worried, then go up to the local police department and ask. It is public record and unless he is a juvenile or a youthful offender, there will be notifications sent out about his release from jail, where he is residing, and what crime he committed. I am originally from bradenton florida. I was just wondering if anyone remembers when the bradenton herald posted an issue with every sex offender in the state. This happened around the time of kidnapping and death of the little girl at the carwash in sarasota.. think her name was jessica lunsford.

I think you are absolutely right. I think that people judge before they know the facts. They hear a little bit of information and run a log way with it , not knowing the whole of it. Like I said in my previous posts.. the law knows a lot more information on a persons criminal history than the general public. There is a reason why the public is only allowed so much information. Everything is misconstrued. So.. information is limited too keep this from happening. The general public can not pull up a criminal history on a person and read all the facts of the case. Law enforcement can. I understand why people are so angry about the sex offender laws, but from what I am reading in these posts, a lot of people posting are so angry, they dont do their research and really figure out what the law is.

For instance: people are talking about youthful offenders. You can plead to be a youthful offender one time. You have to have committed the crime when you were between the age of 18-21. There are NO restrictions to where they can live or work. The only thing they have to do is come in to register, for 10 years. Everything is confidential. There are no fliers sent out about them in the neighborhood and they are not required to tell anyone they work for about their situation. They are not posted on any websites, etc. No one can come in and request information on them either. So if they were to go get a criminal background check for a job, that information would not be available. After 10 years, the offender is free, sans they commit another sex crime.

I think i can help a little bit with some of the questions people have. Each state is different though, so it would be wise to catch up on laws in your own state.

I used to work in ohio.. and I went to a class on sexual offenders once that talked about sexual offenders getting pink license plates for their vehicles. Much like the DUI tags: yellow with red letters. Again, every state is different.

Oldtimer.. I agree with you. I dont really think they would come out with those plates anyway. I try to go to as many classes as I can sign up for in my career field, and it seems to me that there is a new idea tossed around every class. Good discussion though :).

Oldtimer... you are exactly right. I wish I heard more people say that ! Just let them do their job.. AMEN!

I live in alabama and here is a copy of what I give the offenders. This might give you some kind of insight.. but remember all states are different. You can go to your local police department and request a copy of their laws. :

I understand that my conviction(s) have caused me to be considered a Criminal Sex Offender, as determined by Act 2005-301. In accordance with Title 15 Chapter 20 Code of Alabama, I understand that the following restrictions apply to me.

1.I must reside for a minimum of 30 days at my current address, unless I receive approval from the Ozark Police Department and the Dale County Sheriff’s Department before changing my address. I also understand that if I decide to change my address I must give the Ozark Police Department and the Dale County Sheriff’s Department 30 day’s written notice. If I establish a residence to another state, I will register with the appropriate law enforcement agency no later than 7 days after establishing residence in the new state.

2.If I change my place of employment, I must submit a notice of intent to do so at least seven days prior to beginning employment at the new location.

3.Within 10 days of receiving a verification form from the Alabama Department of Public Safety, I will report to the Ozark Police Department with the verification form. I must report to the Ozark Police Department bi-annually (birth month and sixth month after) to verify employment and residence even if I have not received a verification form from the Department of Public Safety.

4.I shall not establish a residence or accept employment within 2,000 feet of the property on which any public, private or parochial school, licensed day care facility, or any other child care facility is located.

Continuation of post:

5.I shall not establish a residence within 1,000 feet of the property on which any of my former victim(s) or their immediate family members reside, or make any visual or audible sexually suggestive or obscene gesture, sound, or communication at or to a former victim.

6.I shall not establish a residence where a minor resides, unless I am the parent of the minor and my parental rights have not been or are not in the process of being terminated and my child is not a victim of a criminal sex offense committed by me.

7.I shall not change my name.

8.Effective September 1, 2006 I must obtain and always have in my possession a valid driver license or identification card issued by the Alabama Department of Public Safety in my possession.

9.If my conviction involved a child under the age of 12, I shall not loiter on or be within 500 feet of any property on which there is a school, child care facility, playground, park, athletic field or facility, or any other business or facility having a principal purpose of caring for, educating, or entertaining minors.

10.I understand that if I knowingly fail to comply with the provisions of the Community Notification Act, I shall have committed a Class C Felony.
