I am kind of torn with this subject and I know I shouldn't b/c I have always been a firm believer that sex offenders should be locked up , or eye for eye, until a friend of mine got in a situation, and now he is labeled as a monster for life, which is something he is not. What about situations like his, He was a senior in HS, just turned 19, met a girl at a party, they met, striked up conversation, got to know one another, with beer in her hand, she told him she was 17, he had NO reason to question that, they were both highschoolers, shared high school stories, she was a beautiful girl, lip ring, wore rockstart makeup and dressed like a victorian secret model, then she proceeded to get in her car and leave with "her" friend, they exchanged numbers, started seeing one another, and of course adventually had sex. 2 months into the relationship, sheriffs showed up at his door, She was had just turned 14. Her mother found out, and called the authorities. He was arrested, sent to jail, and now at age 20 is labeled for life, had a scholorship for med school, and lost it. Now hes having to work a minimum wage job and can't go any further in life. While this girl, now 15, is still on myspace and facebook with her "naughty girl photos" as she has them labeled, protraying herself at a 18 year old. In a case like this, When are the parents held responsible for letting their 14 year old child stay at home alone long enough to take their car out and go to a party, or when are they held accountable for buying the kinds of cloths that this girl wore on a daily basis, that shouldnt have been bought to begin with? When are they held accountable for not knowing where their 14 year old daughter is when she is out having sex with multiple men lying about her age? Its cases like this where I feel the sex offender laws hurt the wrong people. Dont get me wrong, lock up the predators, the ones that truely do hurt children, or violent rapists, and protect those victims. But what about the few "offenders" that are victims. Any views ??
