Registered sex offender runs for mayor in Texas
A registered sex offender wants to be the next mayor of Wilmer, Texas.
"People need to realize that people make mistakes, and they need to look past those mistakes and forgive and move on," James Sliter tells KTVT-TV. "I'm not asking anybody to condone what I did."
The station says Sliter was placed on probation for 10 years after undercover cops caught him trying to solicit sex from someone he believed to be a minor. (You can read more on his sex-offender registration page.)
"I need to prove to the community that I can be an asset," Sliter says. "I can be a contributing member to society even though I made a mistake in the past."
The election is scheduled to take place May 10.
